Español

Aunque diste bastante, por su sencillez y limitaciones, de ser una gran película, esta historia llama poderosamente la atención por su casi insólita temática en el medio cinematográfico, la homosexualidad infantil, que casi se podría decir que es uno de los últimos tabúes cinematográficos; algo de lo que apenas se ha contado nada, al menos de manera directa. Lo bueno del caso es que es una historia absolutamente desprejuiciada, de una apabullante y sanísima naturalidad, alejándose de todo puritanismo. Quizá le falte desarrollo de guión, el gran handicap de esta bonita pero algo limitada historia, además de no estar muy pulida técnicamente. Esto y un final algo increíble es lo que hace bajar puntos a esta desconocida película danesa, pero merece la pena conocerla para comprobar que afortunadamente no todos los tiempos ni todos los pueblos están regidos por el mismo patrón.

Trama:

This rather unknown film called Bernard and Doris is brought to us in a nice DVDRip from BeStDivX, and the ratings on IMDB seem to be pretty average so you might want to check it out sometime. The cast is half popular with Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes, and that’s mainly it.

Quality: Pretty shit for a DVDRip as the runtime is 103 minutes and this should have been 2CD as the resolution had to be lowered to 592×336 to keep the bitrate sub-par. The MP3 audio is also pretty usual and English, French, and Spanish subs are included.

Sympathetic look loosely based on the relationship between tobacco heiress, Doris Duke (1912-1993) - think Duke University - and her shy butler, Bernard Lafferty. The icy and mercurial Duke fires her butler for serving a chilled cantaloupe; the agency sends Lafferty, formerly household staff to Liz Taylor and to Peggy Lee. He’s an alcoholic, fresh out of rehab. He gradually becomes Duke’s gay alter ego as she romps through life sleeping with young men, making shrewd decisions quickly, managing her fortune and orchids as Lafferty manages her New Jersey estate. With a wine cellar to die for, Bernard falls off the wagon. Can he pull himself together when Doris needs him?

Sinopsis
Estamos en el sistema Griego de fraternidades universitarias, donde Griff, es un miembro de la fraternidad de muchachos quien está teniendo un secreto con otro compañero llamado Pete, estos dos chavos resultan ser gay y de clóset y están en el poceso de ver que pasa con su 'relación'. Uno de ellos quiere tener algo formal, el otro no se identifica con lo gay y prefiere pasarla bien con este chavo y no involuvrarse ni hacer nada en público. Se muere de miedo de salir del clóset y lo más importante no quiere identificarse con lo gay. Griff huye de cualquier sugerencia que le haga Pete sobre una relación, hasta que Pete es la víctima de un accidente brutal. A causa de todo esto Griff tiene que mentir mientras Pete esta en coma, pero también Griff repasa sus sentimientos y muy despacio empieza mostrase como es. Así como la amistad real y la homofobia.

EDWARD II

Gay director Derek Jarman’s Edward Ii revolves around King Edward's open homosexuality, which eventually led to his murder. The film is based on the Christopher Marlowe play about Britain's only acknowledged gay monarch (1307-1327), whose preference for his male lover over his queen created conflict with his barons and eventually led to civil war.

After his father's death, Edward II (Steve Waddington) infuriates his barons and his French queen, Isabella (Tilda Swinton), by sending for his lover Gaveston (Andrew Tiernan). Jarman has designed the movie to jar complacency. Edward and Gaveston talk while two naked men tangle erotically in the background. Annie Lennox pops up to serenade the lovers with the Cole Porter ballad "Every Time We Say Goodbye.” The elegant Isabella -- Swinton is a sexy, roaring wonder in the role -- becomes a gun-toting, bloodsucking vampire after losing her husband's affections. In showing the antigay prejudices behind Edward's violent fall, Jarman makes Edward II more than a visually arresting stunt; it's a piercing cry from the heart.

The king meets an ugly death that involves a red hot poker.That’s an image Jarman wants you to remember, and he succeeds. It’s impossible to forget.

Instead of lush historical settings, the film uses bare walls and dirt floors and puts the cast in modern dress, with contemporary police/military uniforms for the forces of repression.

The gay content of the play is also brought to the fore by Jarman, notably by adding a homosexual sex scene and by depicting Edward's army as gay rights protesters. The love between Edward and Gaveston engage in sexy makeout sessions surround by other gay guys getting it on, too. Edward is quite distracted from affairs of state, much to the distress and anger of the court (somber men in business suits) and his ignored queen Isabella. There are plans to be made, wars to be fought, but Edward is always off taking another tumble with Gaveston. The more the two of them cavort with their gay gang of buddies, the more everyone else in the royal household agrees that something has to be done.

ETERNAL SUMMER (Sheng xia guang nian) is a delicate, quiet, understated and eloquent study of youthful interpersonal relationships form Taiwanese director Leste Chen from a screenplay by Cheng-Ping Hsu based on the novel by the same name by Chi-yao Wang. The style of the film allows a wide audience to appreciate the sexual challenges of teenagers and understand the need for finding love and acceptance in a world at times too busy to care.

The story begins in grade school where Jonathan Kang (Bryant Chang) is a gifted student asked to 'supervise' another young boy in his class, Shane Yu (the dazzlingly gifted young actor Joseph Chang) who has an apparent learning disorder/attention deficit. Shane is rambunctious and athletically gifted while Jonathan is the quiet, reserved, brilliant student. The boys bond as children and grow up together into young men facing the exams for university entrance. A young girl Carrie (Kate Yeung) meets the two boys: first she challenges the studious Jonathan to take a trip to Taipei (ditching school) where she hopes to have a physical encounter. The hotel room is a disaster and Jonathan feels isolated from both Carrie's desires and from deserting his duties at school - and with
Shane, who Jonathan loves far more than merely a best friend. Shane gradually moves into Jonathan's position as Carrie's physical companion and the resulting triangle results in confessions and incidents that allow each of the three involved young people to grow and
understand the spectrum of love.

The story is captured with exceptionally beautiful cinematic effects by cinematographer Charlie Lam and the atmosphere of play and passion is enhanced by the musical score by Jeffrey Cheng. Yet it is the sensitive direction by Leste Chen that encourages the three superb young actors to become immersed in their roles. Chen knows when to say enough
(the sex scenes are sensual and suggestive without even approaching an R rating) and when to allow scenes of quiet and eye contact to carry the drama. Welcome back to Norway in the 1980s - to a time when kids were either "freaks" or "soss" - either oppsitional anti-capitalistic rockers or slickly dressed, synthpop-loving jocks. In Stian Kristiansen's Mannen som elsket Yngve (The Man Who Loved Yngve), we are brought vividly 19 years back in time to re-live those wonderful, frustrating years of youth with an unlikely Stavanger bunch. The hub of the crowd is the companiable Jarle. He's blessed with his fair share of confidence and popularity, has two great friends and a beautiful girl, but still keeps searching for his true identity. His friends are anti-pop, button-wearing rockers who detest the yuppie culture and put almost anything down to maintaining their integrity. Their friendship and their slightly up-and-coming rock band are the only things sacred to them. Then one day, a new kid enters class. Yngve is different, both in appearance and tone. He listens to arty synth pop (Japan), plays tennis and wears fashionable clothes. Jarle is intrigued, his friends are not.

Mannen som elsket Yngve is not an easy film to conduct. It's aspirations and objectives are diverse, complex and not at all straightforward. Stian Kristiansen's work here, in his first feature, is absolutely brilliant. He is able to combine his periodic spoof/homage with some timeless, profound discussions on identity, sexual orientation and youth. Rolf Kristian Larsen, who is emerging as one of the greatest Norwegian acting talents at present, is used wisely as an instrument for the film's many shifts in mood and tone. And these shifts are Kristiansen's most impressive feat; he balances his film around them with impressive rhythm and flair. He alternates between comedy and serious drama with perfect timing, thus constantly avoiding wearing us out or making us uncomfortable.

Tore Renberg's script is perceptibly full of insight. He is familiar with the different arch-types upon which he bases his characters, but he makes them very human and, assisted by the brilliant acting ensemble, we're learning about people instead of observing puppets. Speaking about the acting, this might be some of the best collective acting ever in a Norwegian film. And the impressive part is that, except for Wiggen and Broch, these are all local Rogaland performers. Ertvåg and Berning both make promising debuts (the latter a refreshing comedic talent), and the fine Trine Wiggen is developing into the Norwegian equivalent of Frances McDormand - which must be said to be something of a compliment.

Mannen som elsket Yngve is important and uplifting - a combination that shouldn't be underestimated. It presents its joyful segments just as convincingly as it does the graver subjects. How many well-directed, freshly portrayed high school/college house parties have you seen depicted on film recently? Well, here is one you'll definitely enjoy.
