Bud é um garoto solitário e introvertido de 12 anos. Ele é o espectador de sua própria infância, que transcorre entre o calor do lugar, junto de sua mãe e seus irmãos, o burburio do bairro e as salas de cinema, onde encontra uma fonte inesgotável de sensações. A hostilidade dos professores e colegas de turma e a descoberta de sua homossexualidade intensificam a sua solidão!

A temática gay é sutil , mas óbvia desde a segunda cena (LINDA!) onde Bud olha um jovem trabalhador sem camisa , da janela de um dos quartos de sua casa, com uma mistura de desejo, incerteza e vergonha, pois o pegaram observando o jovem trabalhador... É o começo de sua sexualidade. Em outra cena, temos o Cristo crucificado (o mesmo ator que faz o trabalhador, também faz o Cristo) em alusão à luta interior entre o sagrado e o sexual. Esse garoto é gay, embora talvez ainda não saiba!

O filme é a terceira e última parte da trilogia autobiográfica sobre a juventude do Diretor Terence Davies. Davies usa de recursos como inserções de pequenos diálogos, de vários filmes e canções para evocar o conteúdo emocional da vida de Bud. Interessantemnete o filme não conta uma história; é sobre as memórias, as emoções e sentimentos dos personagens, muitas vezes expressados simbolicamente. É cinema da melhor qualidade!
