Simon is an exploration of two men, opposites in almost every way except in their enormous potential in the power of friendship. Camiel is a gay, tender, polite, dental student. Simon is straight, noisy, outspoken, crafty, boisterous and a bit crude café owner. The two collide in an accident, an act of fate that inextricably bonds them through the power of friendship. The film lays the foundation of that friendship through it's joys, challenges, estrangement and ultimate redemption and reconciliation.
After years of estrangement fate again intervenes and the two men reconnect at a time when Simon is critically ill. Simon calls upon all his resources and involves Camiel in the difficult process of life's ending. Simon's strength of character (despite his outwardly bombastic and crude facade) gives Camiel the opportunity to learn and grow - and gives the audience some touching, tender and thoughtful perspectives on Camiel's processes in that growth.
The film is fun, naughty, smart and funny but ultimately it is a life-affirming tale about the importance of "friendship", "family" and "humor" and their importance to surviving the most difficult of times in one’s life. It is a little jewel of a film !
